The Student Loan Repayment Program is governed by Article 21 of our contract. Under this program, HUD may agree to repay by direct payment to the lender (on behalf of the employee) all or part of any outstanding federally insured student loan or loans.
In order to be eligible to participate in the program, employees need to be in federal government service for at least 12 months and have a current performance rating of at least "fullly successful."
Thanks to the Union's efforts, HUD has expanded the window of time during which employees may apply for repayment benefits. In the past, the application period had been as short as a week, often during the summer when many employees were on leave.
The program depends on availability of funds.
